THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE OFFENBACHER

The Autobiography of the Offenbacher traces the life of a storied violin as it witnesses the history of Central and Eastern European Jewry from the late eighteenth to the late twentieth century. Crafted by a Jewish master luthier from Offenbach, Germany, the violin becomes the narrator of its own journey, passing through Jewish and non-Jewish musicians whose lives and art resonate on its strings. Its path leads from German inns to Czarist Russia, through pogroms and World War I, to Yiddish cabarets in Poland, the Holocaust, the East Bloc years, and finally a transformed Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

With each new musician and family, the Offenbacher absorbs shifting cultures, historical upheavals, and the evolving voice of Klezmer music. Its odyssey honors a people’s spirit, struggles, and joys, showing how life, love, and hope can imbue an instrument with a legacy that sings far beyond its music. In the end, the Offenbacher’s long trek becomes a testament to endurance, memory, and the power of song.
